On April 10, 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established national limits for six types of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS. These substances, known as “forever chemicals,” do not easily degrade. They are heat-resistant and linger in the environment for long periods. Fortunately, the Borough of Stone Harbor has been testing its water supply for these chemicals. To date, no PFAS has been detected. Stone Harbor will continue routine monitoring. Residents can feel confident that their water supply is safe and free of these chemicals. The EPA estimates that only 6% to 10% of drinking water systems will be affected by this new regulation.
